The taximeter inside the taxis determines the cost hence the longer you travel the more you pay. You are also charged depending on whether you are traveling during peak or off peak times. Some of the taxis accept credit card payments but generally payment is made in cash. There are Eurotaxis perfect when you have a lot of luggage or special needs.
There are a variety of rental car companies in Madrid where you can get a car to ride on your own though you will have to be used to the traffic to move around easily. The hired cars are also good for moving far away from the city to explore the surrounding villages of Madrid. The airport system is also well established and you can always get cheap flights in and out of Madrid.
